After an exhaustive search to find an actor to play their lead role, producer Steven Bochco finally found his Doogie Howser in Neil. The problem was, executives at ABC didn’t like the child actor for the role. Bochco stood by his choice and shot the pilot anyway. The show tested so well with audiences that it was put on the air despite no one at the network believing in it.
