5. He Was Elected Mayor By 10 votes
He was elected the mayor of Burlington, Vermont in 1981 by the slim margin of 10 votes. It was still quite an impressive feat, as he was the country’s only Independent mayor. He said he didn’t even own a suit at the time. He would go on to be re-elected three more times, defeating both Democrats and Republican candidates in the process.
